Currently this is the primary method I am using to showcase my art, my side-projects, tutorials, hobbies, and more. My "channel" has been an extremely rewarding experience, giving me skills in not only visual arts but engaging in my passion for story telling and cultivating important business skills.
Every video, even those not specifically about design, have some elements of digital manipulation. Visual edits like color correction and video transitions allow me to practice design work daily. Many of my videos, however, are directly related to design in digital and sculptural ways. These videos are aimed at my largest demographic of viewers (females 25-34) and speak to my remaining audience of "art-curious DIY-ers". The feedback and comments I receive on these videos help me determine what my viewers enjoy and can be helpful in discovering what visuals are currently popular in my demographics, informing future videos. They are also an excellent way for me to express my design aesthetic in mediums that I love and don't always so easily intersect.
My channel has its roots in the hobby of collecting ball-joint-dolls, beautifully articulated human figures ranging in size from 1/12 to 1/3 human scale, and many of my videos still recall this theme. My work in content creation has helped turn this hobby into a job and an incredible way to utilize many mediums of art at once; sculpture (the dolls themselves and wig-making), painting (customization on the surface of the dolls), and digital (video-making, web design). While the creation of art is the overall theme of my content, hobby plays an important role in growing my audience and making my work approachable.
An important aspect to making accessible art and an intrinsic part of what I personally want to create is the story behind any given work. Storytelling is as important to me as the image itself, whether I am creating a 100 pixel wide logo or a ten minute long video. I strive to create content that is not just speaking about artwork, but visually related to it as well. I believe that it is this attention to storytelling that holds a viewer's attention when there are so many other icons and videos to be clicked, and I enjoy the challenge of making my videos as engaging as possible.
To make a business out of personal artwork is a staggering challenge. Creating content for YouTube has taught me this lesson again and again. Skills such as happily listening and responding to harsh criticism or complaints, keeping an organized schedule, daily decision-making, proper budgeting for content, and constantly receiving and reviewing feedback is key to maintaining a high quality product that viewers will enjoy watching. Reviewing my demographics and viewer watch times helps me create more focused content. There simply is no audience without marketing and business strategy, so I consider these very seriously.
